In this article I cover the latest details surrounding the upcoming dinosaur documentary series Walking With Dinosaurs. Could a trailer be dropping sometime this week? Find out below!

Walking With Dinosaurs Returns

Over 25 years after the premiere of the original Walking With Dinosaurs series, this iconic show is set to return this summer. The new series, produced by BBC Studios and PBS, is a co-production with ZDF and France Télévisions.

The upcoming series to be shown on BBC One and BBC iPlayer will consist of six episodes, each with a runtime of 50 minutes. It will focus on the dinosaurs of the Mesozoic era, incorporating the latest scientific research and palaeontological information.

The official trailer for the new series could be here sooner than we think this week. BBC Earth released this Keep your eye out short earlier today. Check the video out below!

A trailer drop for the upcoming documentary series does look to be on the cards over the next few days. It will be interesting to see what the trailer will highlight and focus on. I am expecting a mixture of dinosaur sequences alongside the expected fieldwork and excavation scenes, a departure from the original 1999 Walking With Dinosaurs series.

Walking With Dinosaurs 2025 will narrate the story of an individual dinosaur, whose remains are being excavated by palaeontologists. As the dinosaur’s life history is uncovered from the rock, the series will travel back through time to the past, bringing the dinosaur to life using advanced CGI and the latest scientific understanding.

We found out recently that there would be tie in books for the new series. You can find out more about this below.

The Companion Book

The official tie in book Walking With Dinosaurs: Uncovering the Secret Stories of Prehistoric Life is now listed on Amazon and DK Books for pre-order releasing on the 5th of June 2025.

You can check out the released book image from DK Books below.

The Walking With Franchise

The Walking with series has grown a lot over the years becoming its own franchise. Following the success of Walking with Dinosaurs in 1999, Walking With Beasts released in 2001 which was also critically acclaimed at the time. The franchise expanded with the sequel series Walking With Cavemen in 2003. The series returned to the big screen in 2013 with Walking With Dinosaurs 3D, a film set in the Late Cretaceous period, 70 million years ago. The film featured talking dinosaurs and followed the story of a young Pachyrhinosaurus trying to survive.

It is an exciting time to be a dinosaur enthusiast and documentary fan. We have been fortunate to see some great palaeo focused documentaries over the past few years. I just hope Walking With Dinosaurs 2025 can exceed expectations and engage its audience through the latest scientific research, palaeontological evidence and scientific theories.

I will be looking to review the palaeontological aspects of the new Walking With Dinosaurs series once it releases, so you will want to keep up to date with the latest blog posts on the website this summer. You can add the upcoming series on BBC iPlayer to your watch list here.
