Venture into the Lost World…One Minute at a Time

A warm welcome to The Palaeo Minute!
Welcome to this bonus edition of The Palaeo Minute! In this behind-the-scenes dispatch, I will walk you through the process of writing, researching, and refining the newsletter. How it came to be, why it matters, and how science communication can spark curiosity about life in the past, present, and beyond.
This bonus edition explores:
- The Spark behind The Palaeo Minute: How a simmering idea throughout 2024 evolved into a living, breathing science communication project.
- Shaping the First Editions: The editorial decisions, thematic planning, & symbolic choices that laid the foundation for the newsletter’s tone & identity.
- Inside the Tyrannosaurid Edition: A dive into the research, structure, & storytelling that made Newsletter 2 a palaeontological powerhouse.
- Science Beneath the Surface: From bone histology to jaw biomechanics, explore the anatomical insights & research methods that drive each edition.
Did you know?
The logo of the T. rex biting the clock’s minute hand symbolises change. Each new dinosaur discovery reshapes how we understand these animals and the time they lived in. The broken clock represents not time lost but time reimagined, reminding us that palaeontology evolves with each timely discovery.

Bringing the Newsletter to Life
If you have not already, I recommend starting with Newsletter 1: Welcome to The Palaeo Minute – Your Source for Prehistoric Knowledge! It offers a foundational overview of the newsletter’s creation and the journey that led me here. As I mentioned in that edition, The Palaeo Minute had been simmering in my mind throughout 2024. Turning it into a living, breathing science communication project took time, dedication, and a whole lot of palaeontological passion.
Planning the Launch
Throughout the year, I worked on developing banners for The Palaeo Minute, exploring a range of designs to capture the newsletter’s spirit. I scoured the internet for backgrounds to use from fern coated backgrounds to images of Montana’s Badlands.

Early on I settled on two designs one focusing on The Palaeo Minute logo in the centre of darkened ferns, and a beach setting.

I also experimented with cropped versions of the banner designs as potential logos for social media platforms, such as the beach setting logo shown below. The final red and blue versions were not selected until late in the process, but they ultimately best embodied the tone and offered the most professional finish. I was striving for an evocative gateway into a Lost World of palaeontological discovery.

Every banner was shaped by the same research rigour that drives the newsletter itself. I aimed for a look that felt both vintage and premium, as if it belonged on the cover of a finely bound edition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World. Compared to earlier drafts, these banners felt more immersive and better aligned with the project’s narrative vision.

Choosing which newsletters to release first was no easy task. While it is tempting to dive straight into dinosaur content, I wanted readers both new and seasoned to understand the heart of the project: my passion for palaeontology, the symbolism behind the logo, and what to expect in future editions.
That is why Newsletter 1 had to be a warm welcome. It set the tone and laid the groundwork for the journey ahead.
Then came Newsletter 2: The Secrets of Tyrannosaurs – Growth, Dominance, and Evolution a true joy to develop. Interestingly, it was written quite late in the overall process. By then, most of the first-year content was already drafted, but I knew the tyrannosaurid edition had to be something special.
Researching the Tyrant Kings
When tackling a topic as vast as tyrannosaurs, clarity of the piece is key. There are countless research avenues to explore, so I narrowed the focus to two core themes: growth and evolution.
My first step is deep research. I scoured academic databases, revisited papers in my own collection, and mapped out a structure to guide the newsletter’s flow. This led to the following sections:
- Tyrannosaurs Unleashed: Astonishing adaptations of the ultimate predator.
- Science Meets the Skeleton: How new techniques are transforming our understanding of tyrannosaurid bone growth.
- Form and Function: What tyrannosaur growth reveals about their reign.
Each section dives into a distinct aspect of tyrannosaurid palaeobiology. Starting with size and volumetric scaling made anatomical sense, these were colossal predators and their sheer scale is what captivates anyone lucky enough to stand before a mounted skeleton.

Anatomy, Histology, and Jaw Power
I wanted readers to go beyond the basics. So I included anatomical features like the high broad snouts, square-fronted ilium, and the arctometatarsus, details that deepen our understanding of tyrannosaur morphology.
Bone histology was another must. By exploring lines of arrested growth, readers could learn how palaeontologists estimate age ranges and growth rates. And of course, no tyrannosaur edition would be complete without a mention of their legendary jaws. I made sure to include a did you know fact early on and a bit of info about jaw power later in the edition.
Building a Palaeo Powerhouse
My aim for Newsletter 2 was to deliver a shockproof, dose of palaeontological insight. While it is a longer read, future editions will vary in both length and focus to keep things fresh and accessible.
This edition was built through careful planning and refinement, with a deliberate focus on specific traits: growth and evolution to craft a compelling science focused narrative. Each section was designed to build on the last, guiding readers deeper into the world of tyrannosaurid palaeobiology.
And let me be clear there is still plenty more to uncover about these iconic predators. This free edition will not be the last time tyrannosaurs thunder through The Palaeo Minute.

Looking Ahead
Palaeo storytelling plays a vital role in engaging, educating, and inspiring wonder about the natural world. Through The Palaeo Minute, I aim to transform science communication turning each newsletter into a time capsule of discovery. I hope this behind-the-scenes glimpse has offered insight into my process. I am genuinely excited for readers to explore the upcoming editions. There is a treasure trove of science, fossil finds, and prehistoric wonder waiting to be unearthed.
