In this article I cover the new BBC series of Walking With Dinosaurs, the upcoming companion book by DK Books and when we can expect the series to hit our screens.

The release date for the upcoming palaeontology documentary series Walking With Dinosaurs has been highly anticipated. Over 25 years after the premiere of the original Walking With Dinosaurs series, this iconic show is set to return this year. The new series, produced by BBC Studios and PBS, is a co-production with ZDF and France Télévisions.

The BBC revealed this quick tease for the new series back in June 2024.

The upcoming series to be shown on BBC One and BBC iPlayer will consist of six episodes, each with a runtime of 50 minutes. It will focus on the dinosaurs of the Mesozoic era, incorporating the latest scientific research and palaeontological information.

Unlike its predecessor, this new Walking With Dinosaurs series will narrate the story of an individual dinosaur, whose remains are being excavated by palaeontologists. As the dinosaur’s life history is uncovered from the rock, the series will transition back to the past, bringing the dinosaur to life using advanced CGI and the latest scientific understanding.

The BBC officially announced the new show on the 23rd of January 2025, and we now know that the series is to be released this summer! Publisher DK has published the latest information which confirms that the new dinosaur series is not far away now.

A cutting-edge dinosaur book for a new generation

  • Beautiful imagery and expert insights: Uncover the latest information as told by professional dinosaur hunters and palaeontologists, which unfolds in the TV series’ signature narrative format and is accompanied by gorgeous imagery.
  • Step into the breathtaking prehistoric world: Wade through prehistoric swamps, roam sprawling plains and discover primordial forests full of ancient life – home to some of our planet’s largest and most fascinating inhabitants.
  • More than a companion book: Go beyond the Walking With Dinosaurs TV show by uncovering the backstories of each featured dinosaur, as told by the experts who brought the series to life.

Walking With Dinosaurs’ first appearance in 1999 was the UK’s most-watched science program in the 20th century. Now 26 years later, it’s back – alongside this gorgeous book which continues the journey even beyond the documentary series.

The hidden clues of the past have been painstakingly pieced together and compiled in this brilliant volume that dinosaur enthusiasts and natural history buffs will not want to miss.

This new book sounds like a great companion piece to the upcoming series. Most exciting of all is the confirmation that this book will be published in early June, suggesting the series will drop before then. I would imagine the series will release probably in May, given that the book drops at the beginning of June. This is a highly anticipated series for me, as I grew up with the original 1999 Walking With Dinosaurs series.

The Walking with series has grown a lot over the years. Walking With Beasts followed the success of the dinosaur series releasing in 2001 and there have been further sequel series such as Walking With Cavemen in 2003. Companion books and merchandise/toys were also made. The series returned to the screen in a big way in 2013 with Walking With Dinosaurs 3D, a film set in the Late Cretaceous period, 70 million years ago. The film featured talking dinosaurs and followed the story of a young Pachyrhinosaurus trying to survive.

The new Walking With Dinosaurs series will be a more scientific journey for audiences with excavations and the paleoenvironment of worked field sites playing a greater role within the documentary story-telling.

I will be looking to review the palaeontological aspects of the new Walking With Dinosaurs series once it releases, so you will want to keep up to date with the latest blog posts on the website this summer. You can add the upcoming series on BBC iPlayer to your watch list here.
