In this article I cover the upcoming New Years Day BBC documentary Attenborough and the Giant Sea Monster which you will not want to miss!
The new BBC documentary Attenborough and the Giant Sea Monster will be dropping on BBC 1 on New Years Day from 8pm-9pm and will also be on BBC iPlayer to watch.
Attenborough and the Giant Sea Monster will focus on the new Pliosaurus specimen that was recovered near Kimmeridge in Dorset which made the rounds on the News and social media a few weeks back. The marine reptile lived over 150 million years ago in the Jurassic seas of Kimmeridge. The fossil skull is exceptionally preserved completely intact.
Sir David Attenborough will follow the excavation of the Pliosaurus fossil in the documentary, and the research undertaken on the specimen to learn more about its palaeobiology and life history. The documentary will feature palaeontologists and scientists exploring the dynamics of how this marine reptile once lived, its behaviour, how it hunted and how it looked.
The Pliosaurus specimen which is the focus of the documentary, will be going on display at the Etches Collection on the 2nd of January 2024 for the general public to be able to see, which is very exciting.
Along with premiering on BBC One and iPlayer, Attenborough and the Giant Sea Monster will also be getting a UK DVD release on the 29th of January 2024 retailing at £12.99. No Blu Ray or 4K Ultra HD Blu Ray release has been announced so far unfortunately.
The announced DVD release contains the upcoming New Years Day Pliosaurus documentary and three other Attenborough documentaries as well.
The Sea Dragon is also included, a 2018 BBC documentary on the excavation, recovery, and fossil preparation of the ichthyosaur specimen on display at the Charmouth Heritage Centre. The Giant Dinosaur a 2016 BBC documentary is also present and focuses on the fossil discovery of the titanosaur Patagotitan mayorum in Patagonia.
The Giant Egg is another BBC documentary from 2011 featured on the DVD release. This documentary examines the eggshell of the Elephant bird. These documentaries are all viewable on BBC iPlayer, so it is worth checking them out before the new documentary drops next week.

Even though there is no Blu Ray or 4K release of the Giant Sea Monster documentary it will mean that those who may not have a chance to catch the newest documentary on TV will be able to buy it later on DVD anyway.
Attenborough and the Sea Monster looks set to be an incredibly fun watch and I am looking forward to checking it out when it airs. You can also find out about another Pliosaurus specimen Pliosaurus carpenteri which I have worked alongside when I volunteered for the Pliosaurus! Exhibition at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery here.
